Addiction and Anger: Awareness, Research and Resources

Addiction and Anger

The attempt to escape from pain, is what creates more pain.” ― Gabor Maté

You see, the acting-out, the yelling, the screaming and even the hitting, all that a person does, serves as a defence against the experience of the anger. It’s a defence against keeping the anger inside where it can be deeply felt. Discharge defends against anger being actually experienced.” ― Gabor Maté

Addiction and Anger

"Addiction and anger are closely intertwined, often creating a challenging cycle for individuals to break free from. Here’s a brief overview of their relationship:
  • Anger as a Cause and Consequence of Addiction: Anger can both lead to and result from addiction. People may turn to substances to cope with unresolved anger or use anger as a response to the frustrations and challenges of addiction 1.
  • Emotional Regulation: Substance abuse disrupts brain chemistry, making it harder for individuals to control their emotions, including anger 2. This can lead to more frequent and intense angry outbursts.
  • Cycle of Dependency: Anger can trigger substance use, and substance use can exacerbate anger, creating a vicious cycle. For instance, someone might drink alcohol to calm their anger, but alcohol can actually increase irritability and aggression 1
  • Impact on Relationships: Unmanaged anger and addiction can severely damage personal relationships, leading to conflicts, isolation, and further emotional distress 3.
  • Recovery and Management: Effective addiction recovery often includes anger management strategies. Learning healthy ways to express and cope with anger is crucial for breaking the cycle of addiction 4. (Source: Microsoft Copilot 2024)
